The rechargeable alkaline battery is a type of cell which can be recharged several times. There are several benefits of using an alkaline battery. They have a long shelf life, low discharge, and energy density. Aside from these, they are environmentally friendly and do not cause pollution when discarded. However, rechargeable alkaline batteries can become damaged when left uncharged for too long. To prevent such damage, it is best to regularly check the battery's voltage.
Rechargeable alkaline cells are constructed similarly to disposable alkaline cells. This includes an insulating layer on top of the cell case. On the negative electrode, there is a zinc powder suspended in a gel. During charging, the fine zinc grains produce hydrogen. These zinc grains are combined with barium sulfate and other additives to increase the capacity of the battery.
Alkaline batteries are used for many gadgets. They can power electric shavers, radios, and remote controls. When used for this purpose, they require a lower charging current. Their high internal resistance also limits their run time. Hence, they are well suited for low and medium drain applications.
Unlike other batteries, rechargeable alkaline batteries do not have to be actively recycled. Their shelf life is nearly 10 years. Moreover, these batteries are easy to maintain and are not a threat to the environment. Unlike disposable alkaline batteries, they do not release mercury or other toxic chemicals in the environment.
